How To Make Dippy Eggs and Soldiers

These soft boiled eggs and soldiers are a perfect classic light breakfast for everyone. A soldier is a thin strip of toast, the strips that a slice is cut into are reminiscent of soldiers on parade. 

The toast is sliced in this manner so that it can be dipped into a soft boiled egg that has had the top of its shell removed.

 ★ Ingredients ★ 

  • 1 70 g egg
  • 2 slices bread
  • salt
  • pepper

 ★ Instructions ★ 

  1. Pour 5cm water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil
  2. Place the egg into boiling water on a spoon carefully so as not to crack the shell.
  3. Slow the water to a simmer and Boil for around 3 minutes for a runny egg , at least 4 - 5 minutes for a firmer egg.
  4. Cut the top of the egg off with a knife.
  5. Toast bread, butter then cut into 2cm strips

  1. Soldiers can be made from whatever your favourite bread is. I like to use dark rye.
  2. are perfect for breakfast, lunch or even a light dinner.

  • Serve immediately in an egg cup with buttered fingers of toast, known as soldiers.
  • Use a small spoon to eat the remaining egg that your soldiers can’t scoop out.

  • Vegemite or Marmite
    Many people also enjoy "marmite soldiers" in the UK or "vegemite soldiers" in Australia which follow the same principle and are spread with Marmite or Vegemite respectively.
  • Fried bread
    Fry thick-cut soldiers of white bread in butter until golden.
  • Avocado
    Spread toast with butter and mashed Avocado.
  • Dijon
    Spread toast with butter and thinly spread dijon mustard.
